Bob was to use a phrase beloved of the ANC a “Stalwart”.Someone whom could be relied upon come rain or shine! There was a lot of rain in the early days before “the sun came out” Nelson Mandela was released and a democratic non racial South Africa came into being. It wouldn’t have happened without the likes of Bob who worked tirelessly in support of the liberation struggle Bob always answered the call ,on the picket line, in the meeting hall,on the streets, speaking out against racism long before it was safe let alone fashionable to do so. The bust of Nelson Mandela with which Bob is pictured on this memorial site and which we Anti Apartheid activists at the GLC erected on the South Bank was attacked with regularity by Apartheids apologists and supporters.Janet and I knew whenever we were on a March or Janet was leading a boycott of Barclays or Tescos in Brixton or demonstrating outside Parliament for the release of Nelson Mandela that Bob could be relied upon for support Bob never faltered or lost the heart or stomach for the fight against racism wherever it manifested wether in South Africa or in Britain itself. And for that he will always be remembered with affection and respect. Hamba Kahle Bob! Go Well Comrade! The Rt Hon the Lord Boateng PC DL
